Announcing the National Export Policy 2006-09, finance and planning adviser for the Bangladeshi government Mirza Azizul Islam stated that the country will implement a three-year export promotion strategy, rather than a single year, making the leather goods and footwear industries’ long-term export strategy a high priority.

He said, "The private sector is the main player in the country's export arena and there is nothing in yearly projection.” Whilst in 1972-73, Bangladesh exported only 25 products totalling a mere $348 million, in the last fiscal year the number of exportable products increased to 176 and income reached $10.5 billion.

The government has set an ambitious export target of $411 million leather sector for the year ending June 30, based on achieving footwear exports of $113 million, finished leather exports of $290 million and bag and purse exports of $8 million.
