The Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has submitted a proposal to the government seeking to establish an infrastructure and other facilities to develop the leather industry in Jammu and Kashmir, the northern-most state of India.

According to Minister of State for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh, CLE will meet in Srinagar in July to develop a plan to create value-added leather processing facilities in the region which consists of three main areasJammu, Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.

He added that CLE is focusing on Jammu and Kashmir because of the raw materials already available in the region, including sheepskin and raw hides.
