Haryana-based leather footwear manufacturer Liberty Shoes Ltd. plans to set up a new shoe factory in southern India to meet growing demand in the domestic market.

The company sells 70% of its men’s and women's footwear, sandals and slippers locally, while the remaining 30% is exported to Europe, the USA, the Middle East and southern Asia.

Established in 1954, the company claims it is the fifth largest footwear manufacturer globally. It currently owns a tannery and four shoe factories in northern India. The group reported annual turnover of $125 million in 2006/07 compared with $100 million in the previous year.

Production capacity was recently doubled to 100,000 pairs per day after it established three new manufacturing plants—two in Himachal Pradesh and one in Uttranchal—at a cost of approximately Rs1.1 billion ($27.1 million).
