Bangladesh’s leather exports rise

According to statistics released by the Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh, leather exports improved significantly during the period July 2006 to February 2007, improving 16.21% to reach $267.91 million from $230.52 million in the corresponding period a year earlier.
Leather footwear exports surged 31.02% to reach $89.07 million from $67.98 million, finished leather exports improved 9.71% at $173.2 million compared with $157.87, and exports of leather bags and purses reached $5.64 million, up 20.77% from $4.67 million.

The government has set an ambitious export target of $411 million for the leather
sector for the fiscal year ending June 30, based on footwear exports reaching $113 million, finished leather exports achieving $290 million, and bag and purse exports rising to $8 million.
