Brazilian fish skin association nominated
Brazilian design publication Arc Design magazine has shortlisted fish recycling association, Arpeixe, for its XXI Top Market Design Prize. The award recognises significant Brazilian projects and products launched from January 2001 onwards, and the association has been entered in the Sustainable Design category.
The Arpeixe group, based in Coxim, Minas Gerais, makes items such as handbags, jewellery, wallets, belts and garments from waste fish skins. The group has already featured in the Top 100 Handicrafts, an initiative from the Brazilian support service to small businesses, Sebrae, and has been selected to take part in the 'Talents of Brazil' project, which promotes the involvement of family-based agriculture in the fashion world, using locally produced raw materials.
