According to press reports, Hungary and Austria are at loggerheads over alleged tannery pollution of the River Raba, which flows across the border.
Hungary claims that pollution from the facility in Burgenland, Austria, is affecting tourism and business in border towns and has demanded that Austria revoke the tannery’s operating licence. However, Austrian officials claim that the river was polluted before the tannery was established in 2000 and that no pollution limits have been exceeded.
Hungary is now considering taking its grievance to the European Commission.
