Rapid growth predicted for Indian leather industry

08/05/2007

Reports indicate that Indian leather exports, currently worth approximately $3 billion, may increase to $8 billion within five years, a 267% rise. The industry is said to be among the top eight earning industries in the country, and tanneries and producers connected to the burgeoning leather footwear sector are expected to do particularly well in the coming years.
The country currently produces 250,000 pairs of footwear each day and this figure is set to increase to over 1.5 million pairs, while tanning capacity is also expected to double.

In addition, the sector’s labour force is expected to grow from 2.5 million to 4.5 million by 2012.

India currently accounts for 10% of global leather production and 15% of global footwear production. The leather industry comprises 23% of India’s exports.
