In spite of an influx of large quantities of Asian footwear into Peru, The Peruvian Exporters' Association (ADEX) has reported that the South American country exported shoes worth $1.835 million in the first two months of 2007, an increase of 6% from the $1.73 million posted in the same period of last year.
Exports covered 20 different categories of footwear, including shoes with leather uppers which accounted for 27% of total exports at $ 489,358.
During the two-month period, manufacturers exported footwear to 24 countries. Colombia was the main export market accounting for 36% of total shipments—worth $664,39—followed by Ecuador at $370,656 (20%), Spain at $248,880 (14%), Chile at $180,942 (10%) and the USA at $126,807. It also expanded its export markets, exporting shoes to Cuba, France, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands Antilles and Finland for the first time.
According to ADEX, there are 72 shoe exporters in the country. The largest producer is Calzado Atlas S.A., which exported footwear worth $355,188 during the period.
