Pakistan’s leather exports rise 35% in March
Finished leather exports were up 63.25% to $20.645 million from $12.646 million compared with February, leather goods were up 30.05% to $34.518 million compared with $26.543 million and footwear was up 11.47% to $9.672 million compared with $8.677 million in February.
Despite this, total leather exports for the nine-month period July 2006 to March 2007 decreased 26.77% to $637.887 million from $871.068 million in the same period last year. This has largely been attributed to a decline in leather garment exports, which fell 32%.
The country exported 11.042 million m² of finished leather worth $185,218 million in this period compared with 12.391 million m² worth $208.811 million in the prior-year period, a decline of 10.89% in terms of volume and 11.3% in value. Leather goods exports fell 33.64% to $369.296 million—including leather garments worth $266.607 million, leather gloves worth $74.358 million and other leather goods worth $28.331 million compared with $556.474 million last year. Footwear exports declined 21.18% to 10.52 million pairs worth $83.373 million—including leather footwear worth $69.983 million, canvas footwear worth $1.609 million and other footwear worth $11.781 million—compared with 15.102 million pairs worth $105.783 million in the same period a year ago.
