An increase in the manufacture of finished leather goods, and shoes in particular, has helped Ethiopia to achieve a significant increase in exports from the leather and leather goods sector. Greater variety and higher quality goods are also assisting growth.

Reports indicate that total exports for the last six months of fiscal 2007 totalled $704.3 million, with exports from the leather sector accounting for 6%, or $42.3 million of this total. This is a 20% rise compared with the corresponding period in the previous year.

The major export destinations from the sector are currently in Asia and EuropeItaly being the most significant buyer—and exports to these regions continue to rise.
