Positive Q1 response from UK retailers

12/04/2007

A new study from financial and business adviser Grant Thornton UK LLP has revealed that the majority of UK retailers issued positive or neutral trading statements for the first quarter of 2007. This suggests that the difficult retail environment experienced over the past few years may have finally abated.

The research revealed that 44% of all listed retailers issued positive trading statements for the first three months of the year compared with 33% in 2006 and 25% in 2005. 46% issued neutral statements leaving only the remaining 10% issuing negative statements. Furthermore, only six profit warnings were issued during the quarter, down from nine in the same period in 2006.

74% of retailers experienced an increase in like-for-like sales, up from 50% in the first quarter of 2006.
