Job cuts at NZ sheepskin tannery

04/04/2007

Japanese-owned sheepskin producer and exporter GL Bowron has announced it is to cut 70 jobs at it Woolston plant in Christchurch, New Zealand, and will move the majority of its production facilities offshore. Although operations will continue at the tannery, which has been in operation since 1881, production will now concentrate exclusively on small volumes of high-end goods and product development.

Commenting on the job cuts, Green Party Economic Development spokesperson Sue Bradford stated, "The high dollar and high interest rates are the twin evils facing the producers of this country today. The government and the Reserve Bank urgently need to re-evaluate their macro-economic policies to help the sustainability of the national and local economies.”
