Vietnam’s leather footwear exports continue to surge

Contrary to the widespread belief that anti-dumping duties imposed by the EU on Vietnamese shoes last year would negatively affect the Asian country’s footwear industry, Vietnam’s leather shoe exports continue to flourish.

According to data released by General Statistics Office of Vietnam, during the first two months of 2007 (January-February) the country exported leather footwear worth $660 million13.4% higher than the $582 million reported in the same period a year earlier.

Vietnam
’s exports of handbags, wallets, suitcases and umbrellas also improved in the same two-month period, increasing 11.11% to $90 million from $81 million in the same period last year.
