In contrast to the recent trend of increased leather exports from Sri Lanka, in the period January to November 2006, exports slipped 6.7% from $42.64 million in the 11-month period of 2005 to $39.78 million during the same period of 2006.

A more worrying statistic was that the country’s leather and leather goods exports declined a significant 30.84% in the same period, falling from $29.45 million
to $20.56 million.

On a more positive note, according to Sri Lankan Customs and the country’s Central Bank, in spite of the worrying trend in leather exports, footwear exports are thriving, increasing 48.88% year-on-year to reach $19.22 million from $12.91 million.

The country’s total exports, including leather, stood at $6.882 billion for the January to November 2006 period, compared with $6.344 billion in the prior year.
