Raw material shortages cause problems in Sialkot

The split leather industry in the Pakistan production hub of Sialkot
is said to be in crisis due to a shortage of raw material in the market caused by the area’s large scale exports. As a consequence there is insufficient split leather available for domestic producers of value-added goods manufactured with splits and as a result exports of such products are declining significantly.

In a joint press release, several split leather manufacturers expressed grave concerns over the situation and urged the government to impose a ban on the export of split leather to save the local industry, which provides jobs to thousands of workers. They also demanded a special package of incentives for the industry in order to help it to survive in the current era of free trade and to ensure the sector’s future.
