Trade relations between the southern Italian region IrpiniaI, in the Avellino province, and Canada were strengthened in 2006 with goods worth approximately €1 million imported to and €8.6 million exported from the region. Agricultural products and food production were the most significant contributors, with leather and leather products playing an important role.

The chamber of Commerce of Avellino and the ‘Sprint Campaign’ hosted a workshop to look at ways of improving bilateral trade and considered measures such as tax breaks in order to maximise Irpinia’s export potential. Attendees at the event included president of the Italian chamber of Commerce in Canada Albert de Luca, vice president of Assocamerestero Augusto Strianese, Raffaele Farella, who is responsible for research at the Institute of Foreign Affairs, and Trade Analyst for Ice in Montreal, Emanuele Giusti.

In terms of the leather and leathergoods sector, 2006 saw an overall decrease in exports, following on from declines seen in the previous two years.

Exports to Canada currently represent 1.5% of total exports from the Avellino province and 11.3% of the region’s total agricultural exports and 4% of its total leather exports.
