Europe assists Pakistan with livestock programme

’s government, with financial assistance from the European Commission, has launched a new initiative, ‘Strengthening of Livestock Programme’, particularly in northern areas of the country, in order to help people to start their own businesses.

Speaking to the media, an official at
Pakistan
’s Livestock Department said that the programme would provide technical training on raising livestock to people involved in milk production and cattle keeping. Guidance is also being given on how to produce quality goods and transporting it to the market.

He added that, with a national herd of 26.2 million buffaloes, 24 million cows, 24.9 million sheep and 56.7 million goats in 2004-2005, a total some 6.5 million families in Pakistan are dependent on livestock for their livelihoods and many were severely affected when more than 11 million cattle perished and many of the buildings used to keep animals were destroyed in the October 2005 earthquake.
The project, which is expected to be completed by 2009, has been launched at a cost of 25.942 million euros, 22.9 million of which was provided by the European Commission, with the rest supplied by the federal government.
