During the seven-month period, overall leather sector exports grew 4.57% to reach $1.660 billion from $1.588 billion in the corresponding period of the prior year. Leather footwear exports rose 14.72% to $492.44 million from $429.25 million in the 2005 period and leather goods improved 2.72% to $400.56 million from $389.95 million. Footwear components increased 12.3% to $124.99 million from $111.3 million, whilst saddlery and harnesses rose 0.3% to $46.21 million from $46.07 million. On a less positive note, finished leather exports fell 0.55% to $370.1 million from $372.13 million and leather garments dropped 9.5% to $190.73 million from $210.76, respectively.
During the same period, imports of raw hides and skins and finished leather rose 19.11% to $203.07 million from $170.49 million, having fallen 4.39% to $36.05 million in the prior-year period. Total leather imports were up 25.78% to $167.02 million from $132.78 million.
