PTA requests measures to halt decline in exports

07/03/2007
As a result of significant decreases in Pakistan’s leather and leather goods exports in recent months, the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA) has submitted a number of proposals to the government for the forthcoming Federal Budget & National Trade Policy 2007-08, in an attempt to avoid any further decline in the sector’s exports.

The incentives proposed by the chairman of the PTA, S.M. Naseem, include:

A reduction in tariffs for raw materials, and in particular the customs duty on the
 import
  of chrome tanning chemicals.

• A reduction in interest rates and re-finance loans

• A cut in utility
costs such as gas, electricity and petrol prices

• The provision of
technical expertise and assistance in improving fashion design
and
  trend forecasting.
The withdrawal of the current 0.25% Export Development Surcharge

The abolition of the 1% export tax, or a reduction to 0.25%
• Financial assistance from the Export Development Fund for the establishment of
in-house effluent treatment plants to meet the demands of
foreign buyers
   and international standards

• The development of a R&D policy for the sector

• Financial assistance for the National Institute for Leather Technology (NILT) to assist
the development of the leather industry.
