The European Confederation of the Footwear industry (CEC) will reveal the results of its R&D project ‘CEC-Made-Shoe’ at Simac and Tanning-Tech in Bologna, Italy, on April 17. Commenced in October 2004, 54 partners took part in the project that involved investment of €20.4 million and an EU contribution of €10.4 million and which was designed to develop a strategy for improving the competitiveness of the European SME footwear sector in the future.

The project aims to alter the approach of the footwear sector from focusing on footwear products to focusing on the people wearing the footwear, represented by three ‘dimensions’ of the human being—comfort, environment and customisation. The concept of ‘comfort’ focuses on the foot in all the aspects of walking, running and standing, ‘environment’ focuses on 100% eco-friendly materials and sustainable processes, whilst 'customisation' aims to improve consumers’ involvement in style and fashion.

It is hoped that the project will facilitate fast reaction and delivery to market, new shoe (product) concepts, and innovative material and process developments which are preferably environmentally sustainable. In addition, it aims to develop new strategies for sales, training and dissemination activities and the overall electronic integration of the supply chain.
