Kenya looks to improve leather industry

According to local reports, the Kenyan government sees the leather industry as a potential growth area and as a means to boost the country’s economy.

As many tanneries in the country are currently working well below full production capacity and a large proportion of Kenyan leather exports consist of raw hides and skins, the government plans to exploit the sector’s potential by nurturing the production of value-added leather goods and exports.

As an initial step towards achieving this goal, a Kenyan delegation has visited the Comesa Leather Products Institute in Ethiopia, in order to examine how the leather supply chain can be improved.
