Lanxess launches new retanning and finishing agents
German chemical company Lanxess has added several new retanning and finishing products to its leather portfolio in order to meet customer demand, particularly in the expanding Chinese and Indian markets.
In the retanning sector, Lanxess has introduced Levotan PS 100—produced at Lanxess’ Wuxi Chemicals Co., Ltd. in
leather soft, even after finishing.
Tanigan HO and Tanigan HO liquid are anionic replacement syntans with excellent lightfastness and resistance to heat yellowing. They can be used in the retannage of all types of chrome leather and in synthetic tanning systems for white leather or added to vegetable tannages. In the production of white leather Tanigan HO and Tanigan HO liquid are said to provide good coverage and a high degree of whiteness for chrome tanned leather. The products are said to produce firm leather with good fullness and grain elasticity whilst maintaining a fine grain thanks to their low astringency. Both products are compatible with all common synthetic, resin and vegetable tanning materials and provide good dispersing properties. When used in the vegetable tannage, they lighten the colour of the leather and accelerate the penetration and dispersion of tanning materials.
In the finishing range, Aquaderm Finish HW2 is a newly-developed polyurethane top coat binder for high wear automotive finishes and coatings. In addition to its good wear resistance and heat, cold and light stability, Aquaderm Finish HW2 is said to have excellent flex characteristics and good rubfastness properties. Furthermore it produces high film elasticity despite its hardness.
Aquaderm Finish HAT is a hard PUD top coat binder for waterborne finishes and coatings. Its main features are its hardness and hydrolysis resistance in combination with very good lightfastness. The product has been specially developed as a PUD top coat component for NMP-free finishes and coatings and can be used in combination with other polyurethane dispersions from the Aquaderm and Bayderm ranges.
Opti-Matt A-1000 is a new dull silica-free acrylic top coat dispersion for furniture leather based on innovative matting technology. Top coats made with Opti-Matt A-1000 are said to provide good wet rubs, good flex resistance and a very pleasant and soft feel with a finish that does not tend to repolish. The product can be used as a sole binder or in combination with Opti-Clear A-1100 as the gloss component in furniture top coats to achieve gloss levels from semi dull to glossy. Both of these products are produced by US-based Rohm and Haas Corp. and marketed by Lanxess.
As a result of recent investments at its
capacity for manufacturing powdered Tanigan and Retingan tanning ranges. This includes Tanigan SR-C, an anionic retanning agent which, in addition to having a dispersing and neutralising effect, is also a strong reducing agent—especially for free formaldehyde. Supplied in powder form, Tanigan SR-C can be employed in the various stages of the retanning process including neutralisation, retannage and dyeing.
