Pakistan’s leather exports continue to fall

According to statistics released by Federal Bureau of Statistics, Pakistan's leather exports fell to $40.245 million in January, a significant 45.93% decline from the $74.432 million reported in December 2006 and 25.47% lower than the figures posted in December 2005 ($99.88-million).

Month-on-month, finished leather exports fell 38.76% to $11.827 million, leather goods exports declined 48.8% to $20.697 million and footwear exports slipped 47.47% to $7.721 million.

For the first seven months of the fiscal year (July 2006-January 2007) leather exports fell 27.44% to $491.437 million from $677.242 million in the comparable period of the prior year. Finished leather exports in the seven-month period fell to 8,115,000m2, valued at $135.989 million, compared with 9,702,000 m2, worth $163.736 million a year earliera decrease of 16.36% in terms of quantity and 16.95% in terms of value. Leather goods exports fell 33.21% to $290.696 million from $435.207 million. This included leather garments worth $208.181 million, leather gloves valued at $62.196 million and other leather goods worth $20.319 million. Footwear exports decreased 17.3% to 8.09 million pairs worth $64.752 million, compared with 9.93 million pairs valued at $78.299 million in same period of the prior year.
