Smuggled Chinese shoes confiscated

22/02/2007

Since the recent seizure of 64 tons of smuggled Chinese footwear by Mexico’s Customs and the Preventive Federal Police, president of the Footwear Industry of the State of Guanajuato (CICEG) José Abugaber Andonie has demanded that the government introduce new, more stringent, measures, stating that seizing the merchandise is not enough and that those responsible must be punished.

The shipment was confiscated in the same location where another large shipment of smuggled shoes was seized in 2005.

Although Mr Abugaber believes that the next six years should be positive for the Mexican footwear industry as a result of President Calderón’s administration favouring the rule of law, he nevertheless called for more thorough customs checks as at present only 5% of containers are currently examined.
