CLE calls for storage facility for hides and skins

19/02/2007
Speaking at the recent India International Leather Fair (IILF), Mukhtarul Amin, chairman of India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE), urged the government to allow foreign hide and skins exporters to set up storage depots in warehouses located close to tanneries in Chennai and other leather manufacturing hubs across India, claiming that these facilities would ensure the availability of raw material and remove manufacturers concerns about the timely supply of raw materials. This request came on the heels of the Indian leather industry announcing that it plans to double tanning capacity by 2010, the success of which will depend on the availability of foreign raw materials.

A Sahasranaman, advisor, EU - India Trade and Investment Development Programme (TIDP) told www.leatherbiz.com that India currently imports approximately Rs13 billion ($295.219 million) worth of hides and skins annually, which equates to 250-300 million square feet every year, mainly from Africa, the Middle East, and New Zealand.
