Couromoda generates sales of $2.5 billion

Brazilian leather and footwear fair Couromoda, which was held on January 15-18, attracted some 70,000 visitors from the retail, import and professional sectors, 9% higher than last year.

The number of countries represented also increased, rising from 66 in 2006 to 74 this yeara 12% increase. The majority of foreign buyers came  from Latin America and the United States.

The fair brought together 1,200 exhibitors and generated orders worth an estimated $2.5 billion, a 4% rise compared with the number signed at the last show. This was a positive outcome for Brazil’s footwear industry which on average generates around 25% of its total annual sales at Couromoda.

Brazil’s footwear exports fell from $1.88 billion in value and 189.3 million pairs in 2005 to $1.85 billion and 179.7 million pairs in 2006. However, in the domestic market there was a 4% increase in sales compared with 2005, with 538 million pairs sold at a value of R$23.6 billion ($11.2 billion).
