A state of alert has been declared in the province of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, following the confirmation of an outbreak of Foot and-Mouth disease in the Cuatro Cañadas, Colonia Sur and Montehoyos districts. Fearing that the problem may spread to other regions of the country, the National Service for Animal Breeding and Food Safety (Senasag) has taken immediate action.
Senasag director Adolfo Arteaga stated that the relevant authorities had visited the affected region and tests confirming the disease have been carried out.
The local council has given Senasag an initial payment of Bs300,000 ($38,000) to help fight the disease and additional funds are expected to follow.
Due to the location of Santa Cruz—which borders with two of Brazil's main cattle producing states, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul—Brazilian animal sanitation authorities have also issued an alert and these areas will now be closely monitored.
