New tannery to bolster Botswana leather industry

24/01/2007

Reports indicate that a new tannery, Tannery Industry Botswana, has been opened in Botswana to limit the country’s dependence on external leather producers such as South Africa.

The new Phakalane-based facility, which is said to have started production last November, will supply leather for both the domestic and for foreign markets that will be suitable for footwear, garments and accessories.

According to reports the tannery will be able to process approximately 900 hides per day which will meet the required quality, unlike the 80% of Botswana’s leather production that currently fails to meet international quality standards due to poor skinning and branding.
