Pakistan leather exports fall

Although Pakistan reported a month-on-month growth in leather exports in December, the year-on-year figures revealed a sharp decline. The leather sector reported exports of $74.432 million in Decemberup 31.8% from the $56.464 million posted in November, but 25.47% lower than in December 2005 ($99.88-million).
During December
Pakistan
’s finished leather exports increased to $19.314
million, compared with $17.191 million in November; leather goods increased 24.22% month-on-month to reach $40.419 million; and footwear exports rose 118.25% from November to reach $14.699 million.

However, exports struggled during the six-month period from July to December with total leather exports falling 26.3% to $436.329 million compared with $591.958 million in the same period in 2005.

A breakdown showed that during the six-month period, Pakistan’s exports of finished leather fell to 7,043,000m2 worth $117.873 million compared  with 8,521,000m2 worth $143.904 million in the comparable period in 2005a decline of 17.35% in terms of quantity and 18.09% in terms of value. Leather goods exportswhich includes leather garments and leather gloves—decreased significantly (-30.89%), falling from $378.748 million in the second half of 2005 to $261.934 million in the same period of 2006. Leather garment exports fell to $188.243 million, and leather gloves decreased to $57.287 million, whilst other leather goods exports fell to $16.204 million. Footwear exports fell by 18.6% to 6.993 million pairs worth $56.722 million compared with 8.875 million pairs worth $69.308 million in same period a year earlier.
