Brazil’s agribusiness exports reach record high

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, the country’s agribusiness exports totalled $49.422 billion in 2006, a 13.4% increase compared with
2005. Its exports accounted for 36% of the overall Brazilian exports in 2006, which were valued at $137.4 billion. Sectors with the strongest export performances in 2006 included leather and leather products, meat, sugar and alcohol.

According to the Ministry, exports to the Middle East increased posted the highest increases (+35.7%), followed by exports to Africa (+20.9%).

However, the European Union is still the main destination for Brazilian agricultural products, absorbing 31.4% of total exports, followed by Asia and the NAFTA countries.

In December alone, agribusiness exports totalled $4.137 billion, 12.9% more than in December 2005. Imports increased by 27.3% to reach $664 million, resulting in a $3.473 billion surplus.
