Relocation of tanneries delayed in Bangladesh

05/01/2007

The project to relocate tanneries from the Hazaribagh region
is now likely to be delayed due to a lack of financial support from tanners.

The Bangladeshi tanners involved have requested compensation totalling Tk2.5 billion ($36 million) from the government for the move to the proposed 'leather estate' at Savar, near Dhaka. Half of this amount has been described as ‘grants’ and the rest as 'interest-free loans'.

Other demands include making the estate a special economic zone with the facilities established for the country's Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and special loan rescheduling facilities for viable factories.

According to president of the Bangladesh Finished Leather and Leather Goods Exporters' Association (BFLLEA), Tipu Sultan, the move would not be practicable.
