Concerns over smuggling in Bangladesh

The leather industry in Bangladesh has expressed concerns that it is likely to fall short of the target set for tanned leather exports, unless the country’s law enforcement agencies fail to stop hide and skin smuggling.

Tanners estimate that Bangladesh produces over 200 million square feet of
leather every year, more than a third of which comes from sacrificed animals; however, they believe that large quantities are smuggled out to neighbouring countries after Eid.
