Over 250 million poultry now on the UK’s poultry register

22/12/2006

Over 250 million birds are now registered on the Great Britain Poultry Register as part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ (Defra) programme of measures to help to reduce the impact of an outbreak of avian influenza. During the first year of the register, which was established in December 2005, 23,791 premises have signed up, holding a total of 258.6 million birds.

In England, Scotland and Wales, poultry keepers are legally obliged to register if they own or are responsible for a poultry premises with 50 or more birds. Those with fewer than 50 birds are encouraged to register voluntarily. Poultry keepers are now also required to notify Defra of any significant changes in the birds that they keep, so that the register is fully up to date.
