USDA report likely to show cattle decline

20/12/2006

The December cattle-on-feed report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) may show that the feedlot population declined in November.

Analysts’ forecasts suggest that as of December 1, there were 1.9% more cattle in feedlots, compared with a year ago. However Dan Vaught of A.G. Edwards & Sons said that based on estimates, the forthcoming report seems likely to show the latest population at a figure slightly below that posted on November 1. He predicted a November 2006 feedlot placement 10% below the comparable 2005 figure, which would be the second lowest November result in the new US large-feedlot data series.

The monthly USDA cattle-on-feed report is scheduled for release on December 22.
