Canada proposes new regulations for US cattle/beef imports

19/12/2006

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is proposing regulatory amendments to create a more responsive, adaptable and uniform import system for bovine animals and products from the
USA.

Under the proposed amendments to the Health of Animals Regulations, US animals and their products would be imported into Canada under CFIA permits. The system will enable faster implementation of revisions to import policies such as the previously announced changes to bluetongue-related import requirements for US cattle. It will also allow the agency to track imported animals and introduce any changes deemed necessary to Canada’s import policies.

The proposed amendments will also standardise Canada’s import controls concerning BSE, in accordance with the agency’s BSE import policy. This policy focuses mainly on bovine animals and products, but also includes several provisions for other animals.
