India and Botswana sign leather promotion MoU

The Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE) and the Botswana Export Development & Investment Authority have signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) for co-operation within the leather sector. The agreement was signed during a visit to
India, by Botswana’s President Festus Mogae.

India is seeking to expand its imports of raw material from abroad to meet its export target for the leather sector and Botswana is seen as a good source with a 300,000 strong cattle population, the country currently exports approximately 350,000 tons of hides per annum to Italian and South African car interior and furniture manufacturers and other leather specialists.

India hopes to raise leather exports to $7 billion by 2010/11 compared with current levels of $2.7 billion. It imported raw hides and skins and finished leather worth $148 million from April to August, an increase of 19.38%.
