South Korea rejects US beef shipments

US
Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns has expressed disappointment at South Korea’s rejection of US beef shipments. The first three shipments sent since South Korea announced that it would re-open its border to US beef, on September 11, have been rejected, with South Korean officials stating that the market is not commercially viable for US beef.

Mr Johanns said, "There is absolutely no food safety issue with any one of these shipments…I can only conclude that these actions are designed to restrict beef trade.”

He added that the objective of the US Agricultural Department would be to examine ways of legitimately opening the South Korean market to US beef and implementing a trade agreement that “reflects science-based international guidelines and facilitates real trade".
