New report on Chinese leather garment exports

07/12/2006

Irish research company Research and Markets has released a new report, ‘China Sourcing Report: Leather Garments’.

It claims that China is the largest volume manufacturer of leather garments in the world, accounting for almost 65% of global leather garment exports and adds that stiff competition amongst suppliers is resulting in a consolidation of the industry.

It profiles 77 major leather garment suppliers and includes a gallery of 179 popular export products.

It also studies how leather garment exports from China have been decreasing over the past couple of years and are expected to continue to decline through 2007.

In the first eight months of 2006, leather garment exports from the country dropped 24% in terms of values, to $1 billion, and 21% in terms of volume, to 28 million pieces, compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. Exports are anticipated to continue to fall by at least 10% in 2007.

Russia is the largest importer of China-made leather garments, purchasing more than 12 million pieces worth $984 million in 2005. This constitutes approximately 43% of China's total exports. The USA is the second largest importer with shipments totalling 21 million pieces at a value of $627 million.
