Implementation of the second phase of India’s national project for cattle and buffalo breeding has been approved, on a 100% grant-in-aid basis over five years, with an allocation of Rs775.87 crore ($173.9 million).
The project, which began in 2000, has a number of aims, including training and self-employment for some 20,000 independent artificial insemination (AI) practitioners; the replacement of some 20 million low-grade cattle and buffalo with better quality animals; increased rural self-employment opportunities; the development of a modern AI network; and central monitoring and certification of semen, semen stations and AI bulls.
