Ten years after the Kashmir government imposed a ban on the fur trade, furriers are set to receive compensation. Following a recent high court ruling, the government will pay compensation, beginning in the first week of December, to some of those affected by the ban.
When the fur trade was banned in the state of Kashmir in 1997, the government agreed to take steps to compensate leather and fur manufacturers. However, although stocks were assessed, inventories prepared and costs fixed, no action was taken and no remuneration was received. This led to those affected by the ban filing a petition for compensation in the high court earlier this year.
The government is currently assessing the number of people affected by the ban.
