Farmers affected by conflict in Lebanon

According to a new damage assessment report produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), damage and loss to agriculture, fisheries and forestry in Lebanon as a result of the recent hostilities are estimated to have cost around $280 million.

Crops, livestock and equipment have been damaged and, according to the report, there has also been lost business and labour opportunities.

Southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut are said to be amongst the most badly affected, as almost 70% of total household income in southern Lebanon is related to agriculture.

Some 3,050 head of dairy cattle, 1,250 bulls, 15,000 head of goats and sheep were lost as a result of hostilities. FAO estimates financial losses to the livestock sector of nearly $22 million.

Start-up funding has been secured for the establishment of a small early recovery coordination office in southern Lebanon and the FAO is seeking approximately $17 million for other priority initiatives.
