European Union lifts ban on South African ostrich meat imports

28/11/2006

The European Union recently acknowledged that South Africa is free from Highly Pathogenic Notifiable Avian Influenza (HPNAI). As a result, exports of fresh ostrich meat have been resumed.

The ban has been lifted under the conditions of a new ostrich protocol that stipulates the compartmentalisation of the ostrich industry and testing of the birds within 28 days prior to slaughter.

The EU decision follows the successful eradication of H5N2 outbreaks in ostriches in the Southern Cape in July. No other outbreaks have occurred, but extensive surveillance will continue throughout the country in all commercial ostriches and commercial and non-commercial chickens. Chickens have thus far remained free of the virus.
