Raw material costs force European leather industry to increase their prices

27/11/2006

Rises in raw material prices are set to result in the European leather industry increasing its prices between 2% and 14%. The increases will affect all major categories, with peaks for calfskins of European origin and better grade wool-on sheepskins. The increases will come as no real surprise to most, as a recent survey amongst visitors at Lineapelle confirmed that the majority expected leather prices to rise.

The rising price of raw materials was debated at the recent Cotance meeting in Lausanne, with leather industry representatives suggesting that, based on market intelligence, prices should in fact be going down rather than up. Members considered pooled market information, an analysis tabled by UNIC and an assessment of hides and skins on the main markets since January 2005and in particular this yearbut were unable to find justification for the raw material price increases.
