Price of Wenzhou shoe exports to Italy rises

According to the statistics released by
Zhejiang customs officials, Chinese footwear production region Wenzhou has exported 2.15 million pairs of shoes, worth $12.95 million, to Italy in the past two months. Although the exports fell 7.17% in volume, in terms of value the figures show a 58% increase. The average price of the footwear increased 70.45%–to an average of $6 per pair–compared with the same period last year.

Officials of the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) said that the quality of Wenzhou shoes has improved greatly in recent months in an attempt to address the duties imposed by the EU. It added that a special national laboratory has also been set up to test the footwear for harmful chemicals before shoes are exported to EU. This came in response to a large number of shoes from Wenzhou having been rejected in the past due to an excessively high content of chemicals such as nickel and cadmium.
