New Bangladesh leather industrial estate

The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), has issued letters to tanners in the
Hazaribagh area proposing the relocation of their units to the Tk1.75 billion ($25 million) leather industrial estate (LIE) at Savar, near Dhaka.

The BSCIC authorities claim to have completed most of the construction work at the estate.

Project director Sohrab Hossain said, "We have sent a letter of Intent to the Hazaribagh tannery owners to relocate their tanneries within six months." He expressed the hope that the new zone could be officially launched before the next Eid-ul Ajha in 2007, when Muslims slaughter a large number of animals for rituals.

The BSCIC is expected to seek tenders next week for the construction of a waste yard for the estate. Tk1 billion has been earmarked for the development of land and other facilities for the tannery industries, while Tk700 million has been allocated for the setting up of effluent treatment plants and other infrastructure works.

The government is also expanding the 200-acre leather industrial estate by a further 200 acres to provide adequate space for the relocated tanneries. The BSCIC authorities recently sent a proposal to the ministry of land in connection with this.

The LIE project was devised by the ministry of industries in 2003 for protecting the capital city and the Buriganga River from toxic pollution caused by waste from the Hazaribagh tanneries.
