US-based designer and manufacturer of high-end office furniture Herman Miller’s National Design Center in New York City has received LEED Gold certification in the Commercial Interiors (CI) category from the US Green Building Council. The Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system encourages the development of more sustainable buildings and interiors, with Herman Miller the first to be awarded LEED-CI Gold rating in New York City.

The 15,400-square-foot facility, which opened in June this year, received 37 credit points, notably for its water conservation, energy efficiency and environmentally responsible materials. The facility features low-flow fixtures that reduce water use by 37 per cent, with 100 per cent of the electric power obtained from certified renewable energy sources. Over 20 per cent of the project’s material value is recycled content, and approximately per cent of the discarded construction material was recovered and recycled.

The New York City National Design Center is the seventh Herman Miller National Design Center in the US and the third to receive LEED certification.
