The previous main importer of Brazilian beef, processed beef products and pork cuts, Russia, stopped importing these products in December 2005 following outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Mato Grosso and Paraná states in Brazil. The ban was extended to Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul e Santa Catarina as well as Sao Paulo and Goias. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cattle Breeding, the ban on beef from Mato Grosso and Paraná has now been lifted by the Russian Federation Veterinary Service.
In 2005, Russia purchased approximately $555 million worth of unprocessed beef cuts from Brazil.
