Plans are underway for a new ‘leather garment city’ near Karachi, Pakistan, with a common effluent treatment plant and modern industrial facilities. Minister of State and Chairman of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Tariq Ikram told Leatherbiz that a proposal has been put forward by various stakeholders including Pakistan Leather Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA) and the government would like to share the cost with private sectors. He has proposed two sites near Karachi.
He has also urged leather exporters to improve designs, increase production efficiency, focus on aggressive marketing and, most importantly, ensure deliveries are on time.
PLGMEA has undertaken a six-month training programme for leather garment workers. Thirteen Karachi companies and 22 from the southern and northern zones participated. Six Korean fashion leather garment and motorbike leather garment provided training in pattern making, cutting and stitching.
Manager of Marketing & Production at Leather UP Limited, Dr Gul Shaikh, told Leatherbiz, "We learnt several of the latest techniques in pattern making and stitching and it will definitely improve our design and exports in days to come."
Total leather exports in the year 2005-06 totalled $1.028 billion compared with $939 million in the prior year.
