Brazilian leather exports up 15% in August

29/09/2006

The Brazilian secretary of Foreign Trade has reported that Brazilian leather exports grew 15% in August compared with July to $173 million. Compared with the same month of the previous year, the increase was 28% in volume and 29% in revenue.

In 2006, leather exports provided a turnover of $1.19 billion and are expected to reach $1.6 billion by the end of the year.

Sales to Indonesia leapt from $4.5 million from January-August 2005 to $28 million in the first eight months of 2006.

However, one concern is the 33% increase of wet blue exports from January to August compared with the same period in 2005. Almost 14 million wet blue hides have already been shipped this year, virtually twice as many as in 2005, a total of 7.2 million hides.

Leather exports from the state of Rio Grande do Sul have been growing at a lower rate than those from Brazil. While the revenue at national level increased 29% in the period, the revenue of Rio Grande grew just 19%. This year, the destinations for hides from Rio Grande have been mainly Vietnam, South Korea and South Africa. Exports to these countries rose 100% in the same period compared with 2005.
