5.72% decline in Indian leather exports

According to a breakdown released by the Indian Ministry of Commerce & Industry, the country’s leather sector registered a decline of 5.72% to $377 million in the first two months of fiscal 2006, April-May, compared with $400 million in the corresponding period last year.

The breakdown showed that India recorded a decline of 6.7% in leather footwear exports to $107.4 million from $115.1 million in April-May'2005. Finished leather fell by 6.82% to $99.83 million, leather goods fell 3.48% to $97.63 million, footwear components fell 6.71% to $25.94 million, leather garments fell 14.8% to $25.15 million and saddlery & harness goods fell 23.6% to $8.44 million from $107.14 million, $101.16 million, $27.81 million, $29.53 million and $11.10 million respectively in April-May 2005. However, exports of non-leather footwear were up by 56.7% to $12.52 million from $7.99 million corresponding period last year.

Imports of raw hides and skins in the two-month period also declined by 5.25% to $51.79 million from $54.67 million in the corresponding period last year. Raw hides and skin fell by 29.6% and leather by 1.95% to $9.02 million and $42.77 million from $12.71 million and $41.96 million respectively during April-May 2005.
